Dear Trails Supporter,
The iconic John Wayne Pioneer Trail is in trouble.
In September, state representatives Joe Schmick and Mary Dye announced their intent to close nearly 130 miles in the eastern half of the trail and give away the publicly owned corridor at no cost to adjacent private landowners. Thanks to trail supporters and local communities, that plan was quickly put on hold—for now.
In response to the public outcry, Rep. Schmick and the Tekoa Trail and Trestle Association are holding public listening sessions to discuss the future of the trail. This is your chance to give direct feedback to Rep. Schmick and speak out in support of the John Wayne Pioneer Trail.

The legislators say they are responding to concerns that a lack of trail maintenance is a big problem. Trail maintenance is a legitimate issue, but the budget for the Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission to fund maintenance for a number of trails has been slashed by the state legislature by 85 percent in the last eight years.
Rep. Schmick has proposed forming an advisory committee comprised of interested parties to discuss the issue and offer recommendations before the legislature reconvenes in January.
Now is your chance to have your say and give him direct feedback.
Help save the John Wayne Pioneer Trail. Attend a public meeting in your region.
Thanks for doing all you can for trails in your state!
Sincerely,
Laura Cohen
