Dear Trail Supporter,
I’ll get right to the point:
Trail funding is under attack and I need your help to fight back.
In July, Senator Rand Paul introduced an amendment to strip all funding from the Transportation Alternatives Program. If successful, this amendment would have delivered the biggest single blow to the trails, biking and walking movement in twenty years.
Fortunately, with the help of thousands of Rails-to-Trails Conservancy supporters, we were able to stop his amendment. But this could just be the beginning.
When your elected officials return to Capitol Hill in just a few short weeks, Senator Paul and his supporters are poised to pick up right where they left off on their vendetta against the Transportation Alternatives Program.
Let me tell you what that means from where I stand as RTC’s Senior Vice President for Policy.
- If this happens, we’ll lose our nation's single biggest source of funding for trails, walking and biking;
- If this happens, communities from coast to coast will lose opportunities to build trails and other walking and biking facilities because of Washington politics.
And I don’t need to tell you what this means to trail users like you if these attacks succeed.
But the operative word here is “if.”
Because IF Rails-to-Trails Conservancy supporters throw their full support behind us to help give us the resources to effectively bring your voices into the debate in Washington, I'm confident that we can protect the already underfunded Transportation Alternatives Program.
This is about much more than a federal program. It’s about connecting our communities, making them healthier and more economically viable. It’s about creating places where we all want to live.
That’s why Keith Laughlin kicked off an emergency campaign to raise $75,000 by August 31. And that’s why I’m asking you effectively join my policy staff by making a contribution today.
