Waiting for Progress on Trails

People biking and walking on a trail

Progress on federal funding for trails and active transportation has been delayed, for now. Congress is close to passing an infrastructure bill that includes 70% more funding for trails, walking and biking, plus the new grant program—championed by Rails-to-Trails Conservancy and supporters like you—that could help communities across the country connect trail networks.

But Congress is closing in on its next deadline in the coming weeks—and your elected officials need to hear from you.

Sign our petition to show your support for investments in connected trail networks nationwide.

Oklahoma River Trails photo by TrailLink user @gouldie64 This Trail System is More than Just OK!

Once known as one of the most obese cities in the country, Oklahoma City residents have taken charge of their collective health by embracing trails and the outdoors. And the Oklahoma River Trails system has helped to transform the state capital into a place where the outdoors provide an integral connection to regional amenities and the greater community.

Met Branch Trail by India Kea Reimagining Public Spaces

Last year, when the team at Rails-to-Trails Conservancy was elbow deep in defining the elements of our next strategic plan, a global pandemic had upended the world, and calls for justice were bringing focus to the deep and far-reaching impact of racial inequities.

In that moment, we explored the strengths of our movement, our role in bringing solutions to these significant social challenges and the opportunities ahead. What we found captured our imagination and brought reason for hope. Read RTC president Ryan Chao's thoughts on what's ahead.

Great Redwood Trail Route by Charles Gandy Progress for the Great Redwood Trail

California's next great rail-trail got a big boost when Gov. Gavin Newsom signed the Great Redwood Trail Act into law in September. The law creates an agency that will oversee the completion of the state's longest rail-trail, spanning more than 300 miles and connecting the San Francisco Bay to the majestic redwoods of Humboldt County.

Rails-to-Trails Conservancy and our supporters have worked closely with the bill's champion, Sen. Mike McGuire, over the last several years to support the funding and planning of this epic trail.

Learn more about the Great Redwood Trail in the Fall 2019 edition of Rails to Trails magazine.
